Teachers and students around the world continue to push the boundaries of education, demonstrating extraordinary dedication, creativity, and collaboration. But there are some individuals who take these traits to unusual – and perhaps unnecessary – levels.
As the school year winds down, ThinkFives thought it would be fun to look at these epic records. We’ve compiled a list of Guinness World Records related to teachers and their students. From the largest spelling lesson to the most people solving a Rubik’s Cube simultaneously, these records showcase the incredible potential of education when passion, innovation, and a sense of fun come together.
We think some are impressive and some are just weird.
Teaching
- Longest lecture: In 2014, Russian teacher Pavel Ushakov delivered a lecture that lasted 200 hours and 2 minutes, setting the record for the longest lecture.
- Longest career as a teacher: Dr. Alaric P. Jacobs holds the record for the longest career as a teacher, with 72 years of service. He taught history and social studies in Florida from 1930 to 2002.
- Longest lecture marathon: In 2015, German teacher Andreas Müller set the record for the longest lecture marathon, teaching for 91 hours straight.
- Most consecutive days of teaching: In 2016, Indian teacher Anand Arnold taught for 300 consecutive days, setting the record for the most consecutive days of teaching.
- Longest marathon teaching session: In 2011, Italian teacher Rita Pierson set the record for the longest marathon teaching session, teaching for 50 hours straight.
Online or Outdoor Lessons
- Most people attending a virtual science lesson: In 2020, a virtual science lesson taught by British teacher Neil Monteiro attracted 16,066 participants, setting a new Guinness World Record.
- Most students attending a single computer programming lesson: In 2019, a computer programming lesson in China attracted 11,918 students, setting the record for the most students attending a single computer programming lesson.
- Largest outdoor math lesson: In 2016, 1,599 students participated in the largest outdoor math lesson, taught by teacher Carlos Ortuño in Spain.
- Largest vocabulary lesson: In 2014, 4,228 students participated in the largest vocabulary lesson, taught by teacher Justin Minkel at Jones Elementary School in Arkansas.
- Largest online art lesson: In 2020, 45,611 participants attended the largest online art lesson, taught by artist Rob Biddulph.
- Largest classroom: In 2007, a classroom in India built to accommodate 12,000 students set the record for the largest classroom.
Classroom Lessons
- Most students attending a history lesson: In 2015, 1,025 students participated in the largest history lesson, taught by teacher Helen Snelson at Mount Kelly School in the UK.
- Most participants in a simultaneous sign language lesson: In 2019, a sign language lesson taught by teacher Jodie Stimpson at Holy Trinity Catholic School in the UK attracted 548 participants, setting a new Guinness World Record.
- Largest mathematics lesson: In 2013, a mathematics lesson taught by Professor Edward Burger at Southwestern University in Texas set the record for the largest mathematics lesson, with 1,995 students in attendance.
- Largest spelling lesson: In 2016, 5,058 students participated in the largest spelling lesson, taught by Indian teacher Ashutosh Upadhyay in Uttar Pradesh.
- Largest science lesson: In 2014, 1,339 students participated in the largest science lesson, taught by teacher Steve McDonald at St. Louis University High School in Missouri.
Students
- Most people blowing a chewing gum bubble simultaneously: In 2017, 1,536 students at St. Andrews International School in Thailand blew chewing gum bubbles simultaneously, setting the record for the most people blowing a chewing gum bubble simultaneously.
- Largest classroom rock band: In 2013, a classroom rock band consisting of 427 students set the record for the largest classroom rock band, performing at the Coleman Coliseum at the University of Alabama.
- Most origami cranes made in an hour by a team: In 2019, a team of teachers at Sakuragaoka Junior High School in Japan made 3,759 origami cranes in an hour, setting the record for the most origami cranes made in an hour by a team.
- Longest marathon playing a video game: In 2019, a student from the United Kingdom named Okan Kaya set the record for the longest marathon playing a video game, playing Red Dead Redemption 2 for a total of 135 hours and 50 minutes.
- Most books balanced on the head in one minute: In 2021, a student named Suchetha Satish from India set the record for the most books balanced on the head in one minute, balancing a total of 101 books on her head.
Accomplishments
- Fastest time to arrange the periodic table of elements: In 2018, a chemistry teacher named Dmitri Mendeleev arranged the periodic table of elements in just 1 minute and 27 seconds, setting a new Guinness World Record.
- Most people doing jumping jacks in 24 hours: In 2013, a physical education teacher named Heidi Siebenaler led a group of students in doing jumping jacks for 24 hours straight, setting the record for the most people doing jumping jacks in 24 hours.
- Most people solving a Rubik’s Cube at the same time: In 2018, 3,997 students solved Rubik’s Cubes simultaneously during a lesson taught by teacher Li Ting at the Jiangsu Lianyungang No. 3 Middle School in China, setting the record for the most people solving a Rubik’s Cube at the same time.
- Longest paperclip chain made by a team in one hour: In 2018, a team of students and teachers at GEMS United Indian School in the UAE made a paperclip chain that measured 1,002 meters long in just one hour, setting the record for the longest paperclip chain made by a team in one hour.
- Most books donated to charity by a school in one week: In 2018, the students and staff at the American School of Bombay in India donated 31,973 books to charity, setting a new Guinness World Record.

You are correct that Paul Miller taught for 80 years. But currently on the Guinness site now as the record holder is: Medarda de Jesus Leon de Uzcategui (b. June 8, 1899), alias La Maestra Chucha, taught in Caracas, Venezuela for 87 years from 1911 to 1998.
